Type 2 diabetes, a largely preventable and, in some cases, reversible disease, is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. Prevalence of type 2 diabetes is increasing globally, and it is projected that by 2050, more than a billion people will be living with the disease, making it one of the most pressing public health issues of our time. There are dietary interventions that have been demonstrated effective for prevention, mitigation and control of type 2 diabetes, but understanding the complex drivers of the disease and the disparities and burden across diverse populations is essential to successful implementation for public health initiatives.
