Momentum for Pathways to Dairy
Net Zero Continues to Build
Net Zero Continues to Build
In the 10 months since its launch, enthusiasm and momentum for Pathways to Dairy Net Zero (P2DNZ) continues to build. More than 100 leading organizations and country governments have already pledged their support, including the 10 largest dairy companies in the world.
The climate initiative has also been featured at a variety of high-profile events recently, including:
- A virtual dialogue on June 1, 2022, was held in the margins of Stockholm+50. The dialogue, Pathways to Dairy Net Zero: How Transformative Agri-food Systems can help Achieve the SDGs, discussed how the dairy sector is stepping up to help achieve the Paris Agreement. Stockhold+50 was a meeting of United Nations (UN) member states, the UN, and other stakeholders that focused on ways to accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and tackle the triple planetary crises of climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss.

- A virtual side event co-hosted by Global Dairy Platform (GDP) and the Republic of Kenya on July 6 during the UN High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development. The side event, Driving SDG Implementation Through Dairy, demonstrated how the global dairy sector is accelerating actions towards the achievement of the SDGs through three major initiatives: P2DNZ, Dairy Nourishes Africa (DNA) the Dairy Sustainability Framework. Opening remarks were delivered by His Excellency Collen Vixen Kelapile, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Botswana to the UN and the 77th President of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

- A UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) virtual webinar for Latin America and the Caribbean July 6-7, 2022. The webinar, From Dialogue to Action: Opportunities for the Agricultural Sector in Latin America and the Caribbean Within the Framework of the Global Methane Pledge, was designed to inform and catalyze concrete actions on methane reduction as countries prepare to meet their commitments under the Global Methane Pledge. GDP is a supporter of the Global Methane Pledge, which has a goal to reduce global anthropogenic methane emissions levels at least 30% by 2030 (from 2020 levels).

New Report Says Animal Health
Important for Helping Cut GHGs
Important for Helping Cut GHGs
Improving animal health can help cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, but more granular approaches to measuring progress are vital if countries are to include it in their national climate commitments, a new report shows.
Diseases affecting animals, how long they live and how productive they are all have a significant impact on GHG emissions, says the report by FAO, Global Dairy Platform and the Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases, entitled “The role of animal health in national climate commitments.”
This means greater investments are needed to establish systems for measurement, reporting and verification. There is currently no standardized method to include improved animal health in most countries’ GHG national inventories or nationally determined contributions. As a result, the importance of animal health is often not clearly reflected in countries’ commitments to fight climate change.

World Milk Day 2022 One of
the Most Successful Yet
the Most Successful Yet
Established in 2001 by FAO to recognize the importance of milk as a global food and to celebrate the dairy sector, World Milk Day is actively promoted around the world every year.
Thanks to tremendous support from the global dairy sector, World Milk Day 2022 was one of the biggest so far. Social media campaigns and in-person events were conducted throughout 113 countries and for the second consecutive year, social media impressions topped 1 billion!
This year’s theme highlighted the work already being done to accelerate climate action and help reduce the dairy sector’s impact on the planet. Using the World Milk Day platform, the dairy sector raised awareness of Pathways to Dairy Net Zero by sharing a wide variety of farmer videos demonstrating how dairy is embracing technology to help create a sustainable future.
