International Protein Symposium Highlights Protein Quality

Hundreds of delegates – either in-person or online – attended the International Symposium on Dietary Protein for Human Health in September 2023 in Utrecht, Netherlands, which featured dozens of presenters from 16 countries.

GDP served on the symposium organizing committee along with representatives from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Atomic Energy AgencyWageningen University in the Netherlands, and Massey University in New Zealand.

The symposium included presentations by several researchers who participated in the Project Proteos protein quality research, a six-year study that ended in 2023. The project, which involved researchers from four laboratories on three continents and was overseen by GDP, showed the importance of animal sourced foods in delivering high quality protein.

Researchers presented their data and made the case for DIAAS to be adopted as the preferred method for measuring protein quality. A journal supplement of conference proceedings will be published by early 2025.
